4/17/14 Spring is finally here, and the added sunshine is motivating our teens to work diligently on their final projects! Throughout the first half of the program, the teens blogged on a wide variety of topics in humans rights. This quarter, they've narrowed down their interests and have developed projects to present at the end of the year.
The first group consists of Lupe, Robbie, and Sandra. They were inspired by the ways women have been mistreated all around the world, and want to do their part to curb these injustices in East Palo Alto. They are creating a YouTube informational video on the resources available to victims of violence.
Gustavo, Jasmine, and Juan are busy interviewing citizens of East Palo Alto to ask them their perspective on their city. They are showing the similarities and differences between the media's portrayal of EPA and the day to day life of its citizens.
We are nearing the end of this year's program, projects are being
12/23/13 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! As this year comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to thank each of you for the time, care, and prayer you’ve given to our youth. Thanks to you, 38 children (including 16 from Manhattan!) have received Bible lessons and/or tutoring support since the beginning of the new school year. Some of you have helped mentor a group of six teens, guiding them to vision for their futures and reach a greater measure of their potential. While numbers aren’t our focus, they remind us both of the importance of our work and the needs that continue to exist in our community.
Please join me also in extending special gratitude to Johnny, Kyle, Bridgette, Ms. Tammy, Angela, and Melanie. Johnny, Kyle, and Bridgette have led the Bible Club and tutoring programs alongside Ms. Tammy from BCM; Angela and Melanie have designed and led the new mentorship program for teens. Their leadership is largely what keeps us in line. They’re just plain awesome.
We are but a small group, but I hope together we are learning about the joys and challenges of following Jesus’s example of serving our neighbors. Your partnership is an immense blessing, and it humbles me to labor with you in Christ.
12/20/13 The O'Keefe Family Center held its first annual Christmas party. They were able to meet all of the other participants and understand that they are part of a community of service that is bigger than themselves. Through the silliness of singing along to Ariana Grande, cheesy icebreakers, and small chat, we were able to bond and hopefully start the year off more united and aware of what the Family Center is.
Nancy was able to join us and share her story of service, and also remind the students that they are part of the story as well. She shared that she was able to go on missions trips due to a diligent saving of bottles and cans, an accessible and relatable story. The students' eyes widened at the simplicity of her fundraising methods, and felt like they could do the same.
The party was fun and full of general ridiculous antics from the mentors as well as the teenagers. However, we hope that beyond that, something started at the party; namely, we hope that each student was inspired and moved to see that their efforts were appreciated and noticed. They have a lot to do in the upcoming year!
