The short documentary features a man named Israel Dejene who lives in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, a community where kids under the age of 20 often get sucked in by drugs and crime. As a passionate skateboarder, Dejene envisioned using skateboarding to empower the kids, to encourage them to stay off the streets, and to give them the opportunity to learn and have fun in a positive way. His vision led to the project “Love in Action” Ethioskate.
Dejene first became inspired to start Ethioskate when he saw kids in his village “sliding down asphalt with plastic fixed to the underside of their shoes.” The project started with one skateboard from Sweden, and has since built the first Ethiopian skate ramp and skate park.
“I want the kids to see that it is possible to be somebody in their life,” Dejene said in the video.
