Xue-yan comes from an extremely unfortunate background. Not only does her family live in extreme poverty, her home environment seems to be one in which her emotional needs cannot always be met. While her mother suffers from severe disabilities, her father spends most of the year away from home, working. His lack of education and resources mark him as a man little concerned with what it takes to be a caring dad. While I'm sure that Xue-yan's family loves her very much, I wonder if her refusal to cry and demand comfort puts on display the lived reality her needs and problems are not always dealt with in a positive manner. I hope that with a healthy heart, Xue-yan can becom even more courageous, but I also hope that she accepts herself and her vulnerabilities. I hope she finds ways to contemplate and understand her environment as well as her emotions. And she can grow up to be an incredibly strong but also happy girl.
