Luckily, there are currently eleven non profits that strive to support people with disabilities. One non profit, called Best Buddies, utilizes human friendship to support people with disabilites all over the world. It is extremely effective in that it shows that people with disabilities are people too. Too often do we assume that people with mental disabilities are less than human simply because a part of their brains do not function like ours do, or because their genetic makeup is different than ours. However, they are every bit as human as we are, and Best Buddies proves it.
What Best Buddies does, is it brings people like us together with people with disabilities, and we become friends. We learn about each other, and for our side, we learn what it really is like to have a disability like Downs Syndrome.
Oftentimes, the results are quite surprising for us, to realize that these people have thoughts and hopes and aspirations too.
Though eleven non profits dealing with the problem of disabilities is already ample, there is a definite call for more widespread and effective help, all around the world. Currently, a whopping eleven percent of the world's population is categorized under "disabled", with over thirty-seven million here in the United States alone. There must be a change - a change for the overall improvement of the world.
