In Japan, it is considered rude for women to have big mouths or to open their mouths too wide, thus depriving them of the universal pleasure of eating giant burgers. One Japanese fast food chain, Freshness Burger, saw this as a financial loss: they were missing out on the market of well mannered women! So they came up with the Liberation Wrapper.
Personally, I think that nobody should feel forced to adhere to any tradition they don’t want to, but it is important to remember that the whole concept and desire for the Wrapper stems from a long and rich cultural history. In fact, it is seen throughout Japanese history, all through the time period of geishas, who painted on their iconic red lips to appear smaller. Looking in on a culture from the outside is something that should be treated with care, especially when the culture is as unique and ancient as Japan’s.
